Why would a manufacturer use lug bolts over lug nuts?

What a pain in the ass getting the wheel back on.

Just did brake pads on my mother-in-laws Tiguan.

No idea, but honestly they’re the same to me.

Well this isn’t why the manufacturer chooses to do it, but from a DIY point of view it’s much easier to replace a sheared lug nut than a stud. Probably done by manufacturer to save cost and time, no need to press in a stud and bolt on the wheel, just the bolt.

^This. Have you ever sheered a lug stud/nut off? It’s also less likey to be cross threaded than a conventional lug nut.

If you use the plastic lug bolt guide in the toolkit, doing VAG/BMW/Merc lug bolts is a lot less annoying than it otherwise is.

Also it sucks and you should convert them to studs.

Yea... I wish I knew about that thing before

Much less likely to shear a lug bolt than a nut. Also, you won't have to punch out and replace the studs once they get old and rusty. On my BMWs I always just wedged my foot under the wheel to hold it in place while I screwed the first bolt in. My Abarth has two little studs on the hub that fit in the wheel and hold it in place which makes it really easy.

I didn't realize anybody used lug bolts anymore. What a PITA.

I wish I knew of these when we had our Passat.

Less prone to damage and corrosion I guess But I think they look better. Have them on our Skoda and I simply use one as a guide and loosely screw it in, then another and then tighten them up.

Except you shouldn’t convert them to studs as everything in that system (wheel, lug bolt, wheel hub, etc) was engineered to use lug bolts. If you can’t work with lug bolts then have a professional work on the car.

I’ve got non-threaded plastic ones which are way faster than threaded ones. But I do also have a set of threaded studs to use on VAG’s that don’t have the rotor bolted down. But for Mercedes and BMW’s the non threaded plastic ones are way better.

And if a dumb ass does cross thread the bolt you can just repair the threads on the hub. Lug nuts are a pain in the ass, I much prefer bolts.

Its a German thing. I can’t think of a car from another country that way.

For a street car I’m sure they’re strong enough, but I put Turner studs on my e36

I wasn’t even aware of either until recently. I’ll keep that in mind if/when I ever work on another car with wheel bolts.

We did it. It was just different and slightly more difficult not having the alignment plus to use

It's all about technique, I've never had a problem with lug bolts. But then, I specialize in German cars.

This was the First time working on a euro. I’m doing one of the air ride air bags on my Allroad in the next week. Any advice?

I haven’t had the pleasure of working on an Allroad yet, but it should be straight forward. It’s engine work that’s a bitch on Allroads. There should be plenty of posts on how to do it though on the forums.

What year is it, I'll check the procedure in the manual.

03 with the 2.7 bi turbo and the rare 6 speed. I have nothing to go by, not even an owner’s manual

If you have a Twitter direct message me your email. My Twitter is @HisStigness.

I’ve downloaded as much of the manual as I think will be helpful.
